Liam had always thought this underground labyrinth was the whole world. At twelve, he'd never seen the sun or felt the wind on his face. His days were filled with routine—endless corridors and the company of other tunnel dwellers, all living in the safety of darkness. But something within him always yearned for more.
"Why must we always stay down here?" he often asked his mother, who would only smile sadly and tell him stories of a world above that was not meant for them.
Drawn by the mysterious glow, Liam stepped inside, his heart pounding with excitement and fear. He reached out to touch the symbols, and as his fingers brushed against them, a warmth spread through his hand and up his arm. It felt as if the very stones were whispering secrets only he could hear.
"What is this place?", he wondered aloud, his voice echoing in the stillness. The symbols responded with a brighter glow, revealing more of their intricate patterns.
Liam watched, entranced, as the images played out before him. A sense of belonging washed over him, as if he was finally seeing a part of himself he had never known. The realization hit him like a bolt of lightning—he was one of them. He had the power to become a dragon.
"Could it be true?" he whispered, his eyes wide with wonder and disbelief. The warmth in his veins pulsed in response, urging him to embrace this newfound identity.
His mother noticed the change in him immediately. "What troubles you, my son?" she asked gently, her eyes filled with concern.
Liam hesitated, then took a deep breath. "I found something," he confessed. "I think I have a power...a gift. But it makes me one of them—the beings the stories speak of."
Every fiber of his being yearned to see the sky, to feel the wind, to discover what it truly meant to be a dragon. But fear held him back—the fear of rejection, of danger, of the world above that he didn't know.
"You must choose your own path," his mother advised. "But remember, whatever you decide, you are never alone." Her words gave him strength, and he knew what he had to do.
He closed his eyes, feeling the warmth spread throughout his body, his heart beating in sync with the ancient magic. Slowly, he let go of his fears and doubts, surrendering to the transformation.
"I am ready," he declared, opening his eyes to see the world anew. The shadows of the underground no longer bound him. With a powerful roar, he spread his newly-formed wings and soared upward, determined to find his place in the world above.
