Lila stepped out of the car, clutching her bag tightly. Her mother knelt down, brushing a few strands of Lila's hair back. "You'll love it here, sweetheart," she said softly. "Max and Min will take care of you. I promise to call every day."
Lila's eyes brimmed with tears. "I don't want to stay here. I want to come with you."
Her mother hugged her tightly, whispered a final goodbye, and drove away. Lila stood frozen, watching the car disappear.
Max smirked, trying to lighten the mood. "So, the city girl finally made it to the farm. Do you even know what mud is?"
Lila glanced at her spotless red boots, then glared at Max. "Do you even know what a hairbrush is?"
Min suppressed a laugh but quickly composed herself. "Max, stop. You're not helping."
Lila struggled to adapt to farm chores. She tripped while carrying a bucket of water, splashing Buttercup, who bounced happily. "Stop playing!" Lila squealed.
Max leaned against the stall door, laughing so hard he snorted. "Maybe we should get her training wheels for the farm."
Min sighed, trying to help Lila steady the bucket. "Hold it steady and don't let Buttercup distract you. She's only six months old, but she knows how to get her way."
Lila grabbed a small spade and stormed off toward the cedar tree. "If they won't listen to me, I'll just find something better to do."
As she dug near the roots, her spade hit something solid. "What the..." She brushed away the dirt, revealing a smooth, round stone with glowing symbols etched into its surface.
Curious about what Lila was doing, Max and Min followed her to the tree.
"What is that?" Max asked, leaning over her shoulder.
"It's glowing," Min said, kneeling beside them.
Without thinking, all three of them touched the stone at the same time.
The stone emitted a bright flash of light. The barnyard fell silent, then erupted into chaos as the animals reacted:
Buttercup leaped into the air, her tail wagging wildly. Daisy stomped her hoof and flicked her tail with annoyance. Cluckie flapped her wings, corralling her chicks in precise formation. Mr. Oink snorted loudly, sniffing the ground as if searching for food immediately tied to this new magic.
Sky fluttered down, mimicking Min's irritated tone: "What is THAT?"
Iris stepped forward, her calm voice silencing the chaos. She sat regally, her cloudy eyes shimmering.
"I've heard of this relic before," Iris began. "My mama told me about it when I was just a pup. It's an ancient artifact, placed here by the first farmers on this land."
She paused as the trio leaned closer. "Legend says it connects humans and animals, but only when touched by those with a special bond. The farm chooses who it needs."
Min frowned. "Special bond? We argue all the time."
Iris chuckled. "Even the strongest bonds aren't perfect. The farm believes in you three."
Min quietly took the relic and placed it in a small box, which she hid in a compartment under the floorboards of the house. "This needs to stay safe," she whispered to herself.
As the sun set, the trio sat under the cedar tree, the barnyard finally calm.
"This farm just got a lot more interesting." Max said.
"And a lot more work." Min added.
Lila hummed softly, her melody blending with the sounds of the animals settling down for the night.
