Sam Max, a 16-year-old boy with fair skin and sad blue eyes, sits alone by a marble fountain, tracing circles in the water. All he wants is a moment of peace, but the castle’s magic hums around him, never letting him rest. He watches younger students race past, their robes swirling, and sighs, wishing for an escape from the pressures his parents left behind.
Jax Zam, a 12-year-old with dark skin, short brown hair, and hazelnut eyes, enters the hall beside Max Sam, a 10-year-old with fair skin and big ears. Their blue clothes stand out among the sea of identical uniforms. Some students glance their way, eyes lingering a little too long, whispers trailing behind them. The headmaster, Jacob Bob, wearing bright yellow robes and a gentle smile, stands at the front, hopeful that these new faces might finally bring change to the castle.
Jax Zam[/@ch_1] and Sam Max examine a display: wands labeled not by wood, but by glowing descriptions of their magical core ingredients.]
"So, the magic comes from whatever you put inside?"
Jacob Bob nods, explaining that each wand’s core is bound by magical contract, and that while anyone can buy the same wand, the core’s power—and the person’s destiny—depends on what they choose to place within. Jax Zam hesitates, staring at the options, feeling the weight of being different in a place that doesn’t always welcome difference.
Sam Max[/@ch_3], desperate to escape his public life, pores over an ancient, forbidden spellbook in the library’s shadowy corner.]
"If I cast this... maybe I could finally be free," he whispers. He chants the words, sending a shimmering beam spiraling towards Jax Zam. In a dizzying flash, the world tilts—Sam Max finds himself inside Jax Zam’s smaller, unfamiliar body, while Jax Zam blinks in confusion, seeing the world from Sam Max’s eyes. Suddenly, the spell ricochets, hitting Max Sam, swapping their bodies for a heartbeat before striking Jacob Bob, who is momentarily trapped in a student’s form.
Jacob Bob[/@ch_4], now in Max Sam's body, raises his wand and gently reverses the spell. The students’ souls return to their rightful places, but the headmaster’s eyes linger on Sam Max with understanding.]
"Sam Max, you don’t have to keep living for your parents. They’re not coming back, and you deserve to choose your own path," he says kindly. "If you want, you can borrow my body for a while—or, better yet, try a new culture here at the castle. Would you like that?"
"Yes," Sam Max replies, his voice trembling with hope. The headmaster smiles and, with a wave of his hand, swaps Sam Max and Jax Zam’s bodies once more, granting each a chance to walk in the other’s shoes.
Sam Max[/@ch_3]—now in Jax Zam’s body—discovers that life as someone from a different culture is far from easy. He feels the constant stares, hears the mocking behind his back, and aches with isolation. Meanwhile, Jax Zam experiences the strange privilege and burdens of being Sam Max.]
"Thanks for letting me borrow your body, Sam Max," Jax Zam says one evening by the fountain, their voices low and honest. Max Sam, who had been offered the role of headmaster and refused, steps in gently.
"Jax Zam is a wonderful person, no matter where he’s from," he says. "Please, don’t ever bully someone because they’re different. Look at me—I have big ears, but people still respect me. We should do the same for everyone." Some bullies jeer, but a sharp-eyed teacher overhears.
Ms. Alder, the house head, stands tall and declares, "Sixty-seven bonus points to Jacobs House, for Jax Zam, Sam Max, and Max Sam—for courage, kindness, and teaching us all what true respect means." The hall erupts in applause, and for the first time, Sam Max and Jax Zam smile freely, knowing they’ve changed the castle for the better.
