Rune wandered deeper into the forest, his small boots crunching over twigs and dry leaves. His eyes, wide with curiosity, scanned the undergrowth. Suddenly, a glint caught his attention among the roots of a towering oak. Kneeling down, he brushed aside the leaves to reveal a large, shimmering egg, its surface smooth and iridescent.
"What could this be?" he whispered to himself, glancing around to make sure no one was watching. Gently, he lifted the egg, cradling it in his arms as if it were the most precious treasure he'd ever found.
Rune awoke with a start, his eyes adjusting to the dim light. The mysterious egg on his desk was moving, tiny fractures appearing on its surface. He watched in awe as the egg split open, revealing a small dragon with scales that glimmered like jewels.
"Hello, little one," he said, reaching out cautiously. The dragon chirped softly and nuzzled his hand.
Rune sat cross-legged on the floor, offering the dragon small pieces of meat. As the creature ate, Rune marveled at its delicate wings and tiny claws.
"I think I'll call you Ember," he decided, smiling as the dragon chirped in approval.
Together, they ventured into hidden glades and climbed fallen logs, their laughter echoing through the trees. Ember's wings were growing stronger, and Rune delighted in watching the dragon attempt short flights, its wings a blur of motion.
"You're getting better every day, Ember!" Rune cheered as the dragon landed gracefully beside him.
Rune's parents were beginning to notice his frequent absences and the unusual noises from his room at night. Meanwhile, Eldrin, the forest keeper, watched the boy with a knowing gaze, his own secrets about the egg making him wary.
"Be careful, young Rune," he murmured to himself, his eyes following the boy's retreating figure.
Rune knew he couldn't keep Ember a secret forever. The dragon was growing, and soon it would need more space and freedom.
"We have to find a way to keep you safe, Ember," he said softly, stroking the dragon's scales.
As the storm continued to howl, Rune resolved to seek out Eldrin and learn the truth about the egg and its magical origins. Together, he and Ember would face whatever challenges lay ahead, bound by the friendship that had begun on a sunny afternoon in the forest.
