Mia Carter sat on the edge of her bed, staring at her reflection in the full-length mirror. She pressed her hand to her stomach, tracing the smooth skin where a belly button should be. For as long as Mia could remember, she had always been different, but today—the first day of seventh grade—felt especially daunting.
Mia hugged her books tightly to her chest as she navigated the bustling hallway. She wore her shirt untucked, hoping it would conceal her secret. Glancing sideways, Mia noticed Jasmine Lee, her best friend, waving from their locker.
"Mia! Over here! Did you see the science fair flyers already?"
"Yeah, I did. I think I might sign up... if I can work up the nerve," she replied, managing a small smile.
The gym uniform was less forgiving, and Mia changed in the farthest corner of the locker room, her back turned to everyone. As the class lined up, Tyler Brooks, a notorious prankster, nudged his friend and whispered.
"Bet you can't guess what's so special about Mia,"
Mia overheard, her cheeks burning as she pulled her shirt lower, determined not to let anyone see.
Jasmine slid into the seat beside Mia, noticing her friend's silence.
"You okay? You seem distracted. Did something happen in gym?"
"It's just... sometimes I wish I could be normal. Everyone would freak out if they knew," Mia whispered, her voice barely audible above the cafeteria din.
Mia stood by her project, a model of the solar system, feeling the weight of dozens of eyes. As the judges approached, Tyler suddenly called out.
"Hey, Mia, bet you can't do a belly roll like the rest of us! Show us your stomach!"
A hush fell over the crowd, and Mia froze, heart hammering. She could feel every gaze pressing into her.
Jasmine stepped forward, placing a hand on Mia's shoulder.
"It's nobody's business what makes Mia different. Besides, differences make us unique—it's what science is all about,"
Mia gathered her courage and looked out at the crowd.
"I was born without a belly button. It's just who I am. It doesn't make me less human—or less amazing,"

Jasmine grinned, and even Tyler looked a little sheepish.
"You were brave, Mia. And your project is incredible,"
"Thanks, Jasmine. Maybe being different isn't so bad after all," Mia replied, her smile wide and genuine as the sunlight lit her face.
