King Alaric sat on his throne, his eyes scanning the faces of those gathered. His heart was heavy with the knowledge of betrayal, yet his expression remained regal and unreadable. "Loyalty is a fragile thing," he mused quietly, his voice barely above a whisper, as he recalled the moments when Lord Cedric had stood by his side, trusted and true.
Lord Cedric, cloaked in shadows, slipped into the hidden passageway. His mind raced with thoughts of the impending rebellion. He knew the risk he was taking, but the cause had become greater than his allegiance to the king. "It is time for change," he murmured to himself, determination in his voice as he disappeared into the darkness.
Alaric sat upright, his gaze fixed on Cedric as he was brought before him. The air was thick with anticipation. "How long have you plotted against your king?" The king's voice was calm, yet carried the weight of his authority.
"Your Majesty, it is not rebellion but a necessary act of justice," Cedric replied, his voice firm, though a hint of regret lingered in his eyes. Alaric studied him, searching for a trace of the friend he once knew.
Alaric pondered the choices before him. His mind returned to the loyalty of his court and the whispers that had reached his ears. He knew the kingdom's stability was at stake. "To forgive or to punish?" he questioned aloud, the fire's crackling his only response.
With a heavy heart, King Alaric addressed his people. "Let it be known that mercy shall guide our hand this day," he declared, his voice strong and resolute. His decision echoed across the courtyard, a testament to his wisdom and the hope for unity.
Cedric, standing amongst the crowd, bowed his head in respect, understanding the weight of the choice made. As the people cheered, Alaric knew the path ahead would be fraught with challenges, but it was a path they would walk together.
