Ayo, a slender twelve-year-old boy with wide, alert eyes, sits on his porch, clutching a worn blanket. The silence is broken by anxious whispers drifting from neighboring homes. As the last lantern sputters and dies, Ayo notices a faint golden glow in the distance, pulsing gently at the forest’s edge.
Unable to resist, Ayo slips through the silent village, feet bare against the cool earth. Each step closer fills him with both dread and hope. As he reaches the lantern, its glow intensifies, illuminating his face and casting long shadows on the tangled roots nearby.

The Lantern Keeper, mysterious and ageless, smiles softly. "You are the first to come when the village needed courage most," she says, her voice echoing like wind through the leaves. "Why is the light fading? What happened to Moonridge?"
"Long ago, your people promised to honor the forest that sheltered them. Over time, they forgot—taking more than they gave, letting fear and neglect shadow their hearts. The lantern remembers every promise, every name… including yours, Ayo."
"But I never made a promise," Ayo protests, his voice quivering.
"You carry their hope. Only someone brave and honest can remind them what they once were," the Keeper replies.

Heart pounding, Ayo steps into the village square. Neighbors gather, faces pale and worried, as he raises the lantern high. "We forgot our promise. The forest gave us light, and we must care for it in return. If we remember, the darkness will lift," he calls, voice clear and unwavering.
Ayo stands tall, hope blossoming in his chest as elders and children join hands to approach the forest together. The lantern, now resting at the altar, shines brighter than ever, a symbol of renewed respect and unity. In the gentle morning light, Moonridge’s promise lives again, and Ayo knows that courage and honesty can rekindle even the most forgotten light.
