Lila, a twelve-year-old girl with tangled dark hair and sea-green eyes, sits in the lamplight, her bare feet tucked beneath her on the couch. She glances anxiously at her younger brother, Sammy, who is stacking wooden blocks on the carpet. A faint silvery sheen glimmers at Lila’s ankles, but she pulls a blanket over them, trembling.
"Lila, why won’t you play pirates with me anymore?"
Lila hesitates, then lets the blanket slip, revealing shimmering scales creeping up her legs. Her voice quivers as she speaks.
"Sammy, something happened to me down at the cove. A sea witch cursed me—I’m changing into a mermaid."
Sammy stares, eyes wide, blocks forgotten in his lap.
"Does that mean you’ll have to leave me? Will you go live in the sea?"
Lila shakes her head, her hands trembling as she clutches her brother’s small fingers.
"No. The sea calls to me sometimes, but I won’t go. I promised to take care of you, and I’ll always be here, no matter what I look like."
"I’m not scared if you’re here. We can still play pirates, right? Even if you have a tail?"
"Of course. We’ll make a ship out of pillows, and you can be the captain."
Lila’s laughter is soft but genuine, and for the first time that night, the fear in her eyes fades.
Neighbors drop by with bread and milk, casting curious glances, but Lila meets their eyes with quiet dignity. Sammy beams at her, proud and unafraid.
She never hears the sea’s call—her heart is anchored by love, and the song of the waves fades beneath laughter and stories shared in their little home.
"Will we always be together, Lila?"
"Always, Sammy. No matter what, I’ll choose you over anything else."
And so, the girl who became a mermaid by accident found her true home not in the sea, but in the steadfast love of family.
