Lila leaned over the edge of the boat, her eyes wide with wonder. Max, standing beside her, pointed eagerly at the water. "Did you see that, Max? Something's shimmering down there!"
The group of children gathered at the side of the boat, their whispers filled with excitement and disbelief. Emma, a skeptic by nature, crossed her arms and frowned. "It's probably just fish or sunlight playing tricks," she said, though her gaze lingered on the water.
Captain Jonas chuckled softly. "Ah, Lake Serene has many secrets, my young friends. Some say mermaids swim these waters, guardians of ancient treasures," he said, his words weaving a spell over the group.
Lila nudged Max with a mischievous grin. "Why don't you dive in and find out if it's true?" she teased. Max hesitated, glancing at the water that seemed to beckon him with silent promises.
Max, deciding to take the dare, had jumped overboard. The water was surprisingly warm, and as he opened his eyes beneath the surface, he glimpsed something extraordinary—a flash of a tail, a cascade of bubbles, and eyes that seemed to hold the universe within them.
"I saw something," Max whispered, his voice a mix of fear and excitement. Emma looked at him, her skepticism wavering. "Maybe there are mysteries we can't explain," she admitted, her eyes reflecting the starlit sky.
