Each night, the king’s twelve daughters vanished from their locked chambers, only to return at dawn with their shoes worn through and eyes sparkling with secrets. The kingdom buzzed with whispers and speculation, as no suitor or guard could uncover the mystery. Wanto, a courageous and clever prince from a distant land, arrived at court determined to solve the riddle and win the king's favor.
Wanto was welcomed with a feast, the king explaining the challenge: discover the secret of his daughters, and he may choose a bride among them. The princesses sat poised and graceful, exchanging knowing glances. "I accept your challenge, Your Majesty," declared Wanto, his voice steady despite the weight of a hundred watchful eyes.
Wanto pretended to sleep on a velvet couch in the princesses’ chamber, clutching a magical cloak given to him by a grateful old woman he’d helped along the road. As the clock struck twelve, he glimpsed the eldest princess tiptoe to her sisters and whisper, "The prince is surely asleep—we may begin." One by one, the princesses lifted a hidden trapdoor beneath their beds, revealing a staircase spiraling into darkness.
Invisible beneath his cloak, Wanto followed the princesses as they made their way through three magical groves—one of silver trees, one of gold, and one of sparkling diamonds. Each time, he broke off a twig as proof. At the edge of a dark lake, twelve boats awaited, rowed by twelve mysterious princes whose faces were pale as moonlight.
Wanto watched as the princesses danced with their shadowy partners until their shoes were threadbare. He kept to the shadows, careful not to disturb the enchantment, though his heart pounded with excitement. As dawn neared, the princesses hurried back up the staircase, giggling and tired, unaware that Wanto followed them silently.
Wanto knelt before the king, presenting the twigs of silver, gold, and diamond, and recounting the night’s events in vivid detail. The princesses gasped, their secret at last revealed. "You have shown courage and wisdom, Prince Wanto. Choose your bride among my daughters," the king proclaimed, pride and relief mingling in his voice.
Wanto chose the eldest princess, whose eyes shone with a newfound honesty, and together they promised to rule with kindness and wisdom. The other princesses, freed from their nightly enchantment, joined the celebration with joyful hearts. Peace and laughter returned to the palace, and the legend of the twelve dancing princesses lived on for generations.
