The wolf, his fur matted and his eyes hungry, prowls through the frostbitten field. He sniffs out the faint scent of food, and his gaze locks onto the rabbit warren. Driven by desperation, he squeezes and wriggles his broad body into the narrow, winding entrance, scraping against roots and frozen earth.
The wolf, having forced his way inside, wastes no time. He tears into the stored food, devouring everything in sight with wild abandon. The sound of crunching echoes through the warren, while crumbs and scraps scatter across the packed dirt floor.
The wolf pushes and grunts, trying to squeeze back through the entrance he’d barely managed before. His fur snags, and his enlarged girth refuses to budge. Panic flickers in his eyes; he claws at the earth but remains wedged, helpless and exposed.
The head rabbit, small but fierce, surveys the scene. The stores are gone, and rage flares in his bright eyes. He calls to his companions, "Someone has stolen our food! Wait—look there! The thief is trapped in our own front door." The other rabbits gather, bristling with indignation and curiosity.
The head rabbit raises his voice, "He came to steal, but now he’ll feed us through the winter!" Working together, the rabbits quickly and efficiently dispatch the wolf, their movements coordinated and determined. They chop up the meat, laying it out on racks above smoky fires, preserving it with salt and careful tending.
"Let this be a lesson to all who threaten us," the head rabbit declares, raising a toast with a mug of herbal tea. The rabbits celebrate their triumph, savoring both their victory and their newly replenished stores, secure in the knowledge that together, they are stronger than any wolf.
