A gust of wind rattles the revolving door as the city’s pulse thrums just outside. The intercom sits by the entrance, metallic and impersonal, its speaker crackling softly in the silence. Faintly, a handwritten sign taped above reads: “Do NOT buzz strangers into the building.” In the distance, footsteps approach, determined and slow.
The Stranger, his voice hoarse and urgent, leans into the speaker.
"Delivery for 14B. Can someone let me in?"
The static answers him. No one presses the entry button. The echo of his words drifts up, unheard, as he tries again, choosing another apartment at random.
Mrs. Callahan, a cautious widow on the third floor, whispers to herself, clutching her phone.
"I don't recall ordering anything tonight. Not opening for anyone."
On the sixth floor, Tommy, a young father, hushes his toddler and glances at the door, remembering the stories he's heard about letting strangers in. Each resident, heart pounding, resists the urge to help, haunted by the warning.
"Please, my key isn't working. I live here, just let me in. It's freezing out here."
The intercom remains silent. He pounds the buzzer for apartment after apartment, changing his story each time—"The police sent me," then "It's an emergency," but the doors remain locked. The security camera blinks red, recording every attempt.
His hands tremble as he presses another button, desperation and rage blending in his voice.
"I need to see my family. Let me in. Please."
Inside, someone hesitates, a finger hovering over the 'Enter' button.
Upstairs, a resident curses softly, realizing too late what they've done. The elevator’s dull chime sounds as the man disappears, the lobby returning to stillness, save for the lingering sense of dread.
Somewhere above, a family’s laughter echoes—unaware of the danger now creeping up the stairwell.
Behind locked doors, residents listen anxiously for footsteps in the hallway. The city outside moves on, oblivious, while inside the high-rise, fear settles like dust, a sharp reminder to never trust the voice of a stranger.
