Maya stood at the edge of the woods, clutching the latest letter tightly in her hand. The paper was worn, its edges frayed, yet the unmistakable handwriting of her twin sister, Lila, leaped from the page. "Come back to where it all began," the letter urged, "I need you." With a deep breath, Maya stepped forward, her heart pounding with a mix of fear and hope.
Maya paused by an old oak, its gnarled branches reaching out like ancient arms. She remembered Lila climbing it, daring and fearless. "This was our kingdom," Maya whispered to herself, tracing the initials they had carved into the bark years ago.
Maya felt a shiver run down her spine as the figure stepped forward, revealing Lila's hauntingly familiar face. "You've come," she said, her voice a soft echo of the past. Maya could hardly believe her eyes, her sister's presence both a comfort and a mystery.
"I never left, not truly," Lila confessed, her eyes reflecting the moonlight. "The woods hold secrets, Maya, secrets I couldn't understand then. I was drawn into their depths, into a realm of whispers and shadows." Maya listened, her heart aching with a mixture of relief and confusion.
"We must go," Lila urged, her grip tightening. Maya nodded, sensing the urgency in her sister's voice. Together, they moved swiftly along the path, their footsteps muffled by the soft earth.
Maya turned to Lila, her heart full. "Will you stay?" she asked, hope lacing her voice. "I'm where I belong," Lila replied with a gentle smile. Maya knew the woods would always hold a part of Lila, and now, a piece of her as well.
