Sophie twirled a strand of hair between her fingers, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "I can't wait for the camping trip. It'll be so much fun!" Lucy, her usual frown softened, nodded in agreement. "Yeah, it's been ages since we did something like this. Just us and the woods."
The girls clambered out of the car, stretching their legs. Sophie breathed in deeply, the scent of pine filling her lungs. Lucy pointed towards the forest. "Let's explore before it gets too dark," she suggested, and the two set off, their laughter mingling with the rustling leaves.
Lucy halted, eyes narrowing at the sight of the cabin. "Look at that," she whispered, tugging Sophie's hand. Inside, the air was stale, dust motes dancing in the slanted rays of the setting sun. "I wonder who lived here," Sophie mused aloud.
Lucy called out, her voice trembling. "Mom?" No response. Just the unsettling quiet, broken only by the rustle of leaves. Sophie clutched Lucy's arm, fear creeping into her voice. "What's happening?" The realization hit them like a cold wave, the horror of the transformation too real to ignore.
Lucy led the way, her heart pounding. "We need to hide," she urged, dragging Sophie along. The cabin loomed ahead, a refuge against the nightmare. They slammed the door shut, barricading it with trembling hands. "What now?" Sophie asked, voice breaking.
Lucy flipped through the pages, eyes widening at the scribbled notes. "Water... it's water that stops them," she realized, breathless. Sophie glanced at the empty bottle beside the notebook, understanding dawning. "The lake," she murmured.
Lucy held Sophie close, the chill of the water seeping through their clothes. The zombies paused at the water's edge, fear flickering in their eyes. "It's working," Lucy whispered, hope rekindling her spirit.
Sophie gasped for air, the cold water invigorating her senses. She watched as Lucy's mother emerged, human once more. Lucy swam to her, tears mingling with the lake water. "We did it," she breathed, a smile breaking across her face for the first time in ages.
