Inside, shelves are tipped and toys scattered as a strange, eerie silence grips the room. Ten familiar pets—Blythe the clever spaniel, Penny the panda, Pepper the skunk, Minka the monkey, Zoe the spaniel, Russell the hedgehog, Sunil the mongoose, Vinnie the gecko, Buttercream the bunny, and Sugar Sprinkles the kitten—huddle together, their eyes wide and fur matted with rainwater. A strange green mist oozes under the door, and somewhere in the back, a dull thumping can be heard.
"Did anyone else hear that?" Blythe whispers, her voice trembling as the others stare at the shifting shadows. The pets’ familiar colors are now muted, tinged with pale green, as if the mist itself is leaching their vibrancy away.
Sunil paces nervously, his normally bright tail drooping. Pepper tries to lighten the mood, but her jokes sound forced and hollow. Suddenly, Vinnie collapses, twitching, as the mist curls around him.
"Vinnie! Are you okay? Say something!" Zoe cries, rushing to his side. Vinnie's eyes open, now glowing a sickly green, and he lets out a guttural groan unlike anything the friends have heard before.
Vinnie[/@ch_8] rises.]
The group recoils in horror as Vinnie lurches forward, reaching out with trembling claws. Penny, always the bravest, steps between him and the others, her own paws shaking.
"We can't let the mist take us too! Hold your breath and stay together. We have to find a way out!" The pets scramble, bumping into toppled shampoo bottles and squeaky toys that echo eerily in the silence.
Buttercream tugs at Russell's paw, guiding him past a fallen shelf. Minka swings from an overhead pipe, scouting ahead with wild, darting eyes. Behind them, the infected Vinnie stumbles after the group, joined by the slowly-transforming Pepper.
"Hurry! The exit’s this way—I can see the alley!" Sugar Sprinkles yells, her voice muffled by the growing fog.
Blythe trembles, torn between fear and loyalty. Russell clutches a chewed-up tennis ball like a weapon, while Zoe's eyes fill with tears.
"Maybe there's still a way to save them—we can't just leave Vinnie and Pepper!" Minka pleads, voice cracking. The others exchange worried glances, torn by the impossible decision.
One by one, the infected are contained, and the mist slowly dissipates. Penny hugs Blythe, her fur damp with tears and rain.
"We'll never forget what we lost tonight. But as long as we stick together, we can face anything—even a zombie pet shop." The group gathers close, watching the rising sun and hoping for a better, safer tomorrow.
