I hesitated at the edge of the road, my breath visible in the bracing air. The houses behind me faded into darkness, their windows like hollow eyes watching my every step. Each time I placed my foot forward, the crunch of gravel sounded deafening—my only companion as I began my final walk down this infamous, fearsome path.
The mist curled around my ankles, cold and invasive, making each step more uncertain. My heart pounded as I strained to see through the shifting fog, every distant snap of a twig sending a jolt of adrenaline through my veins. I glanced over my shoulder, half-expecting to catch a glimpse of something lurking just out of sight.
A sudden giggle drifted through the air, both innocent and haunting, making my skin prickle. I stopped, frozen, listening as the laughter faded into the groaning trees, replaced by the unmistakable rhythm of footsteps mimicking my own. For a moment, I wondered if I was truly alone, or if the road itself had come alive with old, restless spirits.
I stepped into the light, momentarily comforted by its glow, but the lamp buzzed with an unnatural intensity. The circle of illumination felt both a sanctuary and a trap—my heartbeat thundered in my ears as the darkness beyond seemed to pulse with expectation. I lingered, torn between the safety of the lamplight and the necessity to move forward.
Drawing a shaky breath, I pressed on, my fingers brushing the damp, prickly leaves as I squeezed through the narrowing passage. Shadows writhed along the hedges, taking on shapes my mind struggled to dismiss as mere tricks of the night. I forced myself to focus on the faint golden glow at the very end of the road, promising safety and warmth.
Stepping out from the shadows, I felt the weight of fear lift from my shoulders. The field stretched out before me, peaceful and bright under the watchful gaze of the moon. I glanced back at the road, its darkness receding, and realized I had left behind not just a path, but a chapter of lingering dread—one I would never need to walk again.
