Johan peered out the window, his breath fogging the glass as he scanned the deserted street. The once lively village of Billeberga now lay eerily silent, shadows dancing under the flickering street lamps. "We need to be ready, boys," he murmured, turning to his sons, Isak and Noah. The teenagers stood by the door, gripping makeshift weapons, their eyes wide with fear and determination.
Isak hammered nails into a plank, securing it over the window. Noah tested the strength of the barricade, his heart pounding as the distant moans of the undead echoed through the night. "Do you think this will hold, Dad?" he asked, his voice wavering. "It has to," Johan replied, trying to inject confidence into his words, though uncertainty gnawed at him.
As the family fortified their home, a sudden knock on the door startled them. Isak exchanged a glance with Noah, and Johan cautiously approached the door, weapon in hand. "Who’s there?" he demanded. A voice, shaky yet familiar, answered from outside, "It's Anna, from the bakery. Please, let me in!"
Johan hesitated, then unlatched the door, allowing Anna to slip inside. Her clothes were torn, her face smudged with dirt, but relief washed over her as she saw the boys. "Thank you," she breathed. Isak offered her a seat, while Noah fetched some water. "We can't afford to trust everyone," Johan warned, though his voice softened at the sight of an old friend.
The group gathered around the kitchen table, a map of Billeberga spread out before them. Anna traced a route with her finger, "There's a safe house near the river. We might make it if we leave before dawn," she suggested. Noah nodded, "It's risky, but staying here won't keep us safe for long." Johan considered their options, the weight of responsibility pressing heavily upon him.
As the first light of dawn broke over the horizon, Johan, Isak, Noah, and Anna prepared to leave their fortified refuge. "Stay close, and be quiet," Johan instructed, his voice firm. The family and their newfound ally stepped cautiously into the uncertain world, their hearts united by hope and the unyielding will to survive.
