Ethan parked his car at the edge of the forest, the crunch of leaves underfoot echoing in the stillness as he approached the cabin.
Lisa, his sister, followed closely, her eyes scanning the treetops nervously.
"This place gives me the creeps," "Why did we agree to come here again?"
"We needed a break from the city, remember? Plus, it's just for the weekend," Ethan replied, trying to sound more confident than he felt.
Lisa peeled back a sheet, coughing as dust billowed around her.
"Looks like no one's been here for years," "Maybe we should leave it that way," Ethan joked, but his unease was evident.
Lisa moved to the window, peering out into the encroaching dark.
"Did you hear that?" she whispered, her heart skipping a beat at the sound of distant, indistinct whispers.
Ethan and Lisa sat huddled together, the warmth of the fire doing little to dispel the chill in their bones.
"We should have brought more than just a flashlight and some snacks," Ethan admitted.
"Do you think it's safe here?" Lisa asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
"As long as we stay inside, we'll be fine," he replied, though he wasn't sure if he believed it himself.
Ethan led the way, the floorboards groaning under their weight.
"Maybe it's just a raccoon," Lisa suggested, though she doubted her own words.
The attic door creaked open, revealing a room filled with cobwebs and old trunks. A cold breeze seemed to emanate from a small, broken window, and in the corner lay an old, dusty mirror.
Lisa gasped, stepping back in horror.
"What is that?" Ethan breathed, unable to tear his eyes away.
The ghostly figure raised an arm, pointing accusingly at them, and the air filled with a mournful wail.
"We need to leave. Now!" Lisa urged, pulling her brother towards the stairs.
Ethan fumbled with the keys, his hands shaking as he started the engine.
Lisa glanced back at the cabin, its dark silhouette ominous against the night sky.
"Let's never speak of this place again," "Agreed," Ethan said, relief washing over him as they sped away, leaving the haunted woods behind them.
