Ethan, a former blackjack dealer with a knack for survival, crouched behind a toppled slot machine, scanning the empty boulevard for any sign of movement. His heart pounded in time with the distant hum of electricity that still pulsed through the city. Maria, his companion and a resourceful mechanic, clutched a crowbar by his side, her eyes darting nervously.
"We need to find supplies," Ethan whispered, his voice barely audible over the distant rumble of an approaching storm. "And fast. This place won't stay quiet for long," Maria replied, glancing at the darkening skies above.
Zombies, once the lively patrons of Vegas, now roamed the streets with vacant eyes and tattered clothes. Ethan and Maria pressed themselves against the cold glass of a storefront, watching as the undead horde shuffled by.
"We can't stay here," Ethan urged, gripping Maria's arm tighter. "There's a grocery store around the corner," Maria suggested, her voice steady despite the fear in her eyes. "Then let's move," Ethan nodded, leading the way.
Maria rummaged through what remained, tossing cans and bottles into her backpack. Ethan kept watch, his eyes flicking between the entrance and the aisles. Zombies were never far behind, and the thought of being trapped in the store was terrifying.
"We need to be quick," Ethan urged, his voice tense with urgency. "Almost done," Maria replied, zipping up the bag. "Let's get out of here," Ethan said as they made their way back to the entrance.
Ethan and Maria dashed into the rain, their feet splashing through puddles as they ran. The undead followed, drawn by the noise and motion. Ethan led them through a series of alleyways, trying to lose their pursuers in the maze of the city.
"We're almost there," Ethan shouted over the storm, pointing to a nearby hotel. "I hope it's safe," Maria replied, her breath coming in ragged gasps. They pushed open the heavy door, slamming it shut behind them as the zombies closed in.
Ethan and Maria collapsed against the door, panting heavily. The hotel's grandeur was a stark contrast to the chaos outside, offering a brief respite. They knew they couldn't stay long, but for the moment, they were safe.
"We need a plan," Maria said, looking around the room. "We'll rest for now, and figure out our next move," Ethan replied, his voice filled with determination. Together, they settled in, ready to face whatever came next in the city of broken dreams.
