Helen, the mother, steps out first, her arms full of boxes and her face lit with a hopeful smile. James, her husband, follows, glancing up at the ornate gables and shivering despite the gentle breeze. Their children, Mia and Evan, dart up the walkway, their laughter echoing in the lingering dusk. "I told you this place would have character," James says, trying to sound reassuring.
Mia pauses at the landing, peering down a hallway that seems longer than the house should allow. "Come on, Evan, I bet the attic is full of secrets!" Evan hesitates, his fingers trailing along the banister, eyes flicking to a door that wasn’t there a moment ago. "Was that there before?" he whispers, but Mia is already gone, swallowed by the shifting gloom.
Helen tries to unpack the kitchen, but each time she turns, a cupboard appears where none existed, and the window now overlooks a bramble-choked garden she swears wasn’t there. "James, did you move this table?" she calls, her voice quivering. James enters, brow furrowed, glancing uneasily at the shifting walls.
Mia[/@ch_3] and Evan try to find their way back downstairs, but every turn leads them to unfamiliar doors. The corridors pulse with a heartbeat, and the wallpaper seems to ripple with each thunderclap.]
Mia grabs Evan's hand, her bravado gone. "We have to stick together," she whispers, her breath visible in the chill air. Evan nods, swallowing hard as a doorway slams shut behind them, sealing their path.
Helen[/@ch_1] and James hear footsteps overhead—then beneath their feet, impossibly. A faint golden glow spills from beneath a door that had been a pantry moments before. The air hums with intent, as if the house itself is urging them onward.]
James squeezes Helen's shoulder. "Maybe it wants us to find something," he murmurs, voice trembling. Hand in hand, they push open the glowing door, stepping into a room that twists and folds like the inside of a dream.
Helen wipes tears from her eyes, realization dawning. "It’s alive. It’s been trying to show us...itself. Or maybe us, to ourselves," she whispers. The family embraces, the house humming softly, its shifting walls finally at rest, at least for tonight.
