Lena glanced nervously at the trees, her heart pounding in her chest. Max, her little brother, stood beside her, curiosity shining in his eyes.
"Did you hear that?"
Lena squeezed Max's hand tightly, trying to pull him back. Max seemed entranced, his gaze fixed on the darkening path ahead.
"Come play with us… we’ve been waiting," the voice beckoned.
Lena felt a chill run down her spine. Max's small hand slipped from her grasp as he took another step toward the forest.
"Max, wait!" Lena called, her voice a mixture of fear and determination.
Lena felt the ground beneath her feet shift, the leaves crunching softly as they moved deeper into the woods. Max walked ahead confidently, as if led by an unseen hand.
"We shouldn’t be here..." Lena murmured, her voice barely audible over the whispers.
Max stopped, his eyes wide with wonder. Lena stood beside him, her fear momentarily forgotten in the face of such beauty.
"This is amazing!" Max exclaimed, turning to Lena with a bright smile.
Lena took a deep breath, her resolve firming. She looked at Max, her voice steady.
"We have to go back, Max. It's getting late," Lena said softly.
Max walked beside Lena, his excitement tempered by a new respect for the forest's mysteries.
"Do you think we'll ever come back?" Max asked, glancing back at the woods.
"Maybe one day. But not after dark," Lena replied, squeezing Max's hand as they stepped into the safety of the village glow.
