Maya crouched behind an overturned bus, her breath visible in the cold morning air. Scout, her loyal German Shepherd, lay beside her, ears perked for any sound of approaching danger. She peered through the shattered windows, scanning the street for any sign of movement. "We have to find supplies today, Scout," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the rustling wind. Scout gave a low whine, understanding the urgency.
Maya moved cautiously through the aisles of a looted grocery store, her senses on high alert. Shelves were bare, but she managed to find a few canned goods and a half-empty water bottle. "Better than nothing," she muttered, tucking them into her backpack. Scout sniffed at a pile of rubble, his tail wagging slightly as he unearthed a forgotten bag of dog food. "Good boy," Maya praised, patting him on the head.
Maya heard the unmistakable shuffle of feet and quickly ducked into an adjacent alley, Scout close on her heels. A small group of zombies stumbled into view, their lifeless eyes searching. Maya held her breath, clutching Scout's collar tightly. "Stay quiet," she murmured, as the undead moved past, oblivious to their presence.
Maya and Scout found shelter in an abandoned apartment building. The door was barricaded, and she felt a moment of safety as Scout settled in beside her. "At least we're safe for tonight," she sighed, opening a can of beans. Scout lay his head on her lap, his eyes following every movement as Maya ate.
Maya noticed a draft and traced it to a hidden door. Pushing aside the debris, she uncovered a narrow staircase leading downward. "What do you think, Scout?" she asked, more to herself than the dog. Curiosity piqued, Maya descended the stairs, flashlight in hand, Scout following closely.
Maya found herself in an underground community bustling with life. People moved about, eyes weary but hopeful. A makeshift market thrived in the center, offering a glimpse of normalcy amidst chaos. "Welcome," a voice called, drawing Maya's attention. A man approached, extending his hand. "I'm Eli, and you're safe here." Maya hesitated for a moment before shaking his hand, Scout wagging his tail in approval.
