Leo sprinted ahead, his breath visible in the chilly morning air. Behind him, Jason struggled to keep up, his eyes darting nervously through the underbrush. The pounding of boots and barked commands from the agents were growing louder.
"We have to keep moving, Jason!" urged Leo, glancing back with urgency.
Jason collapsed onto the cave floor, his chest heaving. Leo crouched beside him, placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder.
"Do you think we're safe here?" Jason whispered, fear etched in his voice.
"For now. We just need to catch our breath and plan our next move," replied Leo, his eyes scanning the cave's dim interior.
Leo and Jason sat close, sharing a packet of dried fruit and nuts. The silence between them was comfortable, filled with the crackle of the fire and the distant hoot of an owl.
"I never thought it would be like this," Jason said quietly. "Running, hiding... But I'm glad I'm not alone."
Leo nodded, a small smile playing on his lips. "We've got each other. That's what matters."
Leo turned to Jason, his voice soft yet steady. "Jason, there's something I've been wanting to tell you..."
Jason met his gaze, his expression open and curious. "What is it, Leo?"
Leo hesitated, then took a deep breath. "I... I've realized that this journey, being with you, has made me understand myself better. I think I'm falling in love with you, Jason."
Jason's eyes widened, a mixture of surprise and something else, something tender. "I feel the same way," he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. "I didn't know how to say it, but I'm glad you did."
Leo reached out, entwining his fingers with Jason's, a gesture of comfort and promise.
"We'll get through this, together," he vowed.
"Together," Jason echoed, a smile spreading across his face, the fear of pursuit momentarily forgotten in the warmth of their shared understanding.
