Detective Mara Lin steps beneath the flickering streetlamp, her trench coat slick with rain. The townhouse looms before her, its windows darkened, except for a single faint glow upstairs. She takes a breath, pressing the doorbell, the chime echoing eerily within.
Eliot Crane, a wiry man with nervous hands, glances at Vivian Reiss, whose calm demeanor masks sharp intelligence. Detective Lin circles the room, her gaze lingering on a shattered vase and smeared footprints.
"This wasn't a simple break-in. Someone wanted us to find more than just broken glass,"
"Detective, you see ghosts where there are none," Vivian replies, her voice silky, eyes never wavering.
Detective Lin lays crime scene photos on the desk, watching each suspect’s reaction. Eliot fidgets, his gaze darting, while Vivian studies the images coolly.
"Why did you hesitate, Eliot? You recognized something in this photo,"
"It's nothing, I... it's just the clock. It’s always set to 3:14, just like tonight," he stammers, sweat beading on his brow.
Detective Lin[/@ch_1] sets out two mugs.]
She sits across from Vivian, lowering her voice. Vivian smirks, fingers curled around her mug, her posture relaxed—almost triumphant.
"You orchestrated this scene, didn't you? The clues, the vase, the time on the clock—breadcrumbs for us to follow,"
"Detective, everyone has a role to play. Sometimes, the best way to hide the truth is to hand it to you, piece by piece,"
Detective Lin[/@ch_1] quietly confronts Eliot.]
Eliot shakes, his voice cracking as he clutches a crumpled note. Detective Lin listens, her expression unreadable.
"Vivian made me do it. She said no one would believe me. She told me what to say, what to break—she even set the clock,"
"Sometimes, the greatest weapon is the mind,"
Detective Lin watches as officers escort Vivian and Eliot out. She lingers, eyes lingering on the clock, now stopped at 3:14, and the fractured reflection in the glass.
"In the end, it's not about who held the weapon, but who wielded the mind," she whispers to herself, stepping out as the city stirs to life.
