Maya sat hunched over an old journal, her fingers tracing the faded ink. Across the room, Lila sifted through a pile of letters, her brow furrowed in concentration. "I can't shake the feeling that something's off, Lila," Maya murmured, her voice a soft whisper in the quiet room.
"I know," Lila replied, glancing up with a determined look. "Ethan wouldn't just disappear like that. There has to be more to this."
Maya suddenly sat up straighter, her eyes widening as she held up a crumpled piece of paper. "Look at this, Lila. It's a note from him. He mentioned Sophie and something about a secret meeting."
Lila leaned in, her heart pounding. "A secret meeting? With Sophie? This can't be a coincidence, Maya. We need to find out what happened that night."
The café was quiet, its usual buzz replaced by a hushed stillness. Maya and Lila took a seat near the back, their eyes scanning the room for any familiar faces. "I overheard someone mention Sophie here last week," Lila whispered, glancing around.
"Let's hope they come back tonight," Maya replied, her voice tinged with a mix of hope and fear.
Sophie approached their table with a wary smile, her demeanor calm yet guarded. "I didn't expect to see you both here," she said, her voice laced with underlying tension.
"We need to talk about Ethan," Maya stated firmly, her gaze unwavering.
Sophie's smile faltered, a flicker of unease crossing her face. "There's nothing to talk about," she replied, her voice gaining a defensive edge.
Lila tore open the envelope, her hands trembling slightly. Inside was a photograph, blurred and hastily taken, showing Sophie and another figure standing over what appeared to be Ethan's lifeless form. "Oh my god, Maya," she gasped, her voice barely above a whisper.
Maya stared at the image, her heart sinking. "We have to take this to the police. This changes everything."
Lila took a deep breath, her eyes meeting Maya's. "We did the right thing, Maya," she said, her voice filled with resolve.
Maya nodded, the fear replaced by a newfound strength. "For Ethan," she replied, as they stepped into the station, ready to uncover the truth and seek justice for their brother.
