Bryan Farro sighed as he leaned against the weathered railing outside Boundaries Book Store, his mind a whirl of thoughts about his strained relationship with Michael Rubins. Despite the serene setting, a sense of foreboding lingered in the salty air.
"I wish things were different," he murmured, watching the ferry glide into the marina, carrying the weekend's revelers.
"Welcome to Mango’s, where the drinks are strong, and the drama is stronger!" Misty announced, her voice both commanding and playful.
Bryan sat at the bar nursing a soda, his eyes occasionally drifting towards Michael, who was at a nearby table, laughing too loudly with some friends. Their eyes met, and a flash of guilt crossed Michael's face.
"Hey, babe, want a drink?" Michael called out, his words slightly slurred.
"I'm fine, thanks," Bryan replied tersely, turning his attention back to Misty’s performance.
"Everyone, quiet down!" Helen demanded. "Police are looking for information about Eddie Lamare's murder."
The room fell silent, whispers of shock and fear rippling through the audience. Misty Bay's face paled under her makeup, but she said nothing.
Bryan felt his heart race. He looked at Michael, who seemed bewildered, yet a hint of panic flashed in his eyes.
"I can't believe they arrested Michael," Peter said, his Irish accent soft. "Do you think he did it?"
"I don't know," Bryan replied, his voice trembling. "But I can't stay with him. Not after everything."
Peter's expression softened, his feelings for Bryan evident in his eyes. Bryan felt a strange sense of relief, a glimpse of hope amidst the chaos.
Bryan and Peter walked along the beach, the setting sun painting the sky in hues of pink and purple.
"I'm glad you're here," Peter said, his sincerity warming Bryan's heart.
"Me too," Bryan replied, smiling for the first time in days. "I think I finally found where I belong."
"I wish I could tell someone," she whispered to herself, the weight of what she had witnessed pressing down on her.
As the nightlife of Cherry Grove carried on around her, Misty knew that some secrets were better left unspoken, even as the truth simmered just beneath the surface.
