Alex carried a tray through the lobby of the small hotel in Barra da Tijuca, the TV's blaring headlines catching his attention. "Hospitals overburdened, aggressive behavior among infected," the reporter's voice echoed ominously. He paused, a knot tightening in his chest despite his attempt to brush it off. His colleague, noticing his unease, chuckled, "Seems like a horror movie, huh?" Alex forced a smile, "Yeah, they love to dramatize. Remember H1N1?" But deep down, he felt a creeping fear.
As Alex boarded the crowded BRT bus after his shift, the usual hum of the city seemed off. Sirens wailed incessantly, and whispers of unease passed between passengers. A concerned woman beside him asked, "Did you hear? They're closing hospitals downtown." Puzzled, Alex replied, "Closing? What's going on?" She leaned in, voice hushed, "A friend said patients attacked doctors at Souza Aguiar." He tried checking the news on his phone, but the network faltered.
The tension aboard the BRT grew palpable. Near the Recreio Shopping stop, the driver announced, "Attention, everyone. We have orders to halt the trip." A murmur of confusion spread as the bus emptied into the station, filled with equally bewildered commuters. Alex clutched his backpack, feeling the panic around him. A man shouted, "This isn't right! They wouldn't stop everything for nothing!" Another voice, trembling, added, "I saw on the news... people are attacking like animals."
Desperation clawed at Alex as he dialed his brother's number, finally connecting. "Alex? Where are you?" his brother's voice sounded frantic. "At Recreio Shopping. It's chaos here. What's happening?" His brother's urgent reply cut through, "Get home now! It's bad out there..." A distant gunshot echoed, triggering a surge of panic. Screams erupted as people scattered in fear, pushing Alex towards the shopping mall's entrance.
Inside the mall, chaos reigned. Storefronts shuttered hastily, and the cacophony of sirens mixed with cries of distress. Alex attempted another call to his friend Lucas, but the line went dead. Suddenly, a piercing alarm blared from every phone, a governmental alert: "Seek immediate shelter. Do not leave your homes. This is not a test." Fear gripped him as he dashed to a bathroom, locking himself in a stall, heart pounding.
In the flickering lights of the restroom, Alex struggled to steady his breathing. The outside world seemed a distant nightmare. A desperate voice broke his thoughts, "Is someone there? Please, help me!" He froze, torn between fear and empathy. Should he risk opening the door, or prioritize his safety? The episode closed on a tense cliffhanger, leaving his next choice uncertain.
