Detective Lila Brooks, a sharp-eyed girl with a magnifying glass always at the ready, surveys the scene. Her little brother, Timmy Brooks, hovers nervously by the fridge, crumbs suspiciously dusting his shirt.
"One cupcake missing, and a trail of crumbs. Classic. But is it really so simple?"
Muffin[/@ch_3], watches from atop a chair, tail twitching.]
"I didn’t do it, Lila! I swear!"
Lila kneels to examine the evidence, her fingertips brushing a sticky smudge on the linoleum.
"Then whose fingerprints are these, Timmy? And why are there cat hairs in the frosting?"
Lila[/@ch_1] follows the crumb trail past family photos and a forgotten soccer ball. The door to the backyard is slightly ajar, letting in a breeze that carries the faintest whiff of chocolate.]
Lila pauses, noticing a muddy paw print beside the back step. Muffin sits primly on the rug, licking frosting from her whiskers.
"Well, Muffin, it seems you’re not as innocent as you look. But something doesn’t add up..."
Lila bends to retrieve the wrapper, scanning the yard for any movement. She spots a small, muddy shoeprint beside the garden gate.
"Timmy, why is your shoe covered in mud—and why is there frosting on your cheek?"
Lila[/@ch_1] lays out her findings, the evidence neatly arranged beside her notebook.]
"The missing cupcake was just the beginning. Someone—or something—has been sneaking treats for days. Look: fingerprints from both Timmy and Muffin, muddy footprints, and a trail leading to the neighbor’s yard."
"Wait, you mean... it wasn’t just me?"
Lila[/@ch_1], Timmy, and Muffin follow the trail. A group of neighborhood kids is gathered around a picnic table, sharing cupcakes and giggling, while the neighbor’s dog gnaws contentedly on a stolen wrapper.]
"Case closed. The Great Cupcake Caper was a team effort, after all,"
"Next time, maybe just ask for seconds,"
