Alex sprinted down the alley, heart pounding in sync with the echo of his footsteps. His breath formed clouds in the cold air, each exhale a reminder of the urgency of his flight. "I can't stop now," he muttered to himself, glancing back to see dark figures gaining on him.
Liam, a friend and unexpected ally, appeared from the crowd, grabbing Alex's arm. "Follow me, I know a shortcut," he urged, pulling him into a narrow passageway between two towering buildings. Alex nodded, trusting his friend even as adrenaline coursed through his veins.
Alex struggled to keep pace, his lungs burning with exertion. "How much further?" he gasped, the sound of footsteps behind them growing louder. "Just a bit more," Liam assured, though his voice betrayed a hint of concern.
Alex leaned against a wall, trying to catch his breath. Liam checked the gate, testing its hinges. "This way," he said, motioning Alex to follow. The gate creaked ominously as they slipped through, leaving the sounds of pursuit behind.
Alex collapsed onto the grass, staring up at the stars. "We made it," he whispered, disbelief mingling with relief. Liam sat beside him, offering a reassuring smile. "For now," he replied, the gravity of their situation not entirely lifted. But in this moment, they were safe.
Alex turned to Liam, gratitude evident in his eyes. "I couldn't have done it without you," he admitted. "We're in this together," Liam replied, clasping his shoulder. The future remained uncertain, but for now, they had each other, and that was enough.
