Detective Willow Fern, the renowned woodland sleuth, enters the garden, notebook in hand, her eyes sharp beneath the brim of her moss-green hat.The ground is wet and leaves and branches are strewn about from the winds of the thunder storm before sunrise.Lady Petunia, the anxious garden keeper with a penchant for order, wrings her hands by the empty pond."Detective, please! Daisy the duck has vanished without a trace. The garden feels incomplete without her gentle quacks."
Basil, the mischievous rabbit with twitching whiskers;Marigold, the wise old tortoise;Sir Beaks, the proud rooster;Violet, the shy field mouse.[/@ch_4][/@ch_5][/@ch_6] "Let’s hear where everyone was and what they were doing at sunrise,""I was crowing atop the sundial, as always,""I...I was gathering seeds by the ivy archway,"
The grid’s cells are blank, but Willow begins to jot down notes. She sketches a map of the garden: the pond, carrot patch, tool shed, ivy archway, and sundial, each marked with a symbol. The suspects’ names align with clues yet to be decoded. Challenges of debris clean up from the storm will reveal location of each clue.
1. The suspect who was at the sundial did not take Daisy. 2. Daisy vanished from a place next to the tool shed. 3. The rabbit was not at the pond but was west of the rooster. 4. The mouse was two places away from the carrot patch. 5. Someone took Daisy to protect her from the storm. 6. The tortoise was not near the ivy archway or the pond. 7. The one at the carrot patch acted out of jealousy. 8. The field mouse was east of the tool shed. 9. The rooster was north of the pond. 10. The motive of mischief wasn’t connected to the tool shed.
"Let’s see... Basil was west of the rooster, so he must be near the carrot patch. The tortoise wasn’t near the archway or pond—so the tool shed fits. The storm was the reason for someone’s action..." Each clue eliminates possibilities, painting a clearer picture. Willow circles the ivy archway, then glances sharply at Violet, the field mouse.
"Violet, you were east of the tool shed and two places from the carrot patch. You took Daisy to the ivy archway to protect her from the coming storm, didn’t you?" From the archway’s shelter, a gentle quack echoes. Daisy waddles out, unharmed.
"Oh, Violet! Thank you for your kindness—and thank you, Detective,"
