Emma Warren sits hunched on the couch, her hand trembling as she clutches her phone. The voicemail notification blinks insistently, its timestamp reading 2:17 AM—nearly an hour after David Warren was pronounced dead. Her heart pounds in her chest, a mixture of grief and disbelief swirling inside.
"This can’t be real. David…?"
She presses play, bracing herself as her late husband's voice fills the room: "Emma, I need you to know…I’m sorry. There’s more you must find."
Emma’s mind whirls with questions. She checks David’s old phone, but the voicemail isn’t there. Driven by desperation, she rummages through drawers and cabinets, knocking over a stack of unpaid bills. Her fingers brush against something hard behind the flour canister—a small, black prepaid phone, its screen dark but intact.
"Why would he hide this?"
She powers it on, anxiety knotting her stomach.
Emma listens to the message again, parsing every syllable for hidden meaning. The words are cryptic, the tone urgent. On the phone’s contacts list, she discovers only one entry: “Red Box.” Her mind races, recalling a storage unit David rarely mentioned.
"Red Box…what were you hiding, David?"
Determined, Emma grabs her coat and keys, ignoring the chill that seeps into her bones. She drives through empty streets slick with rain, headlights illuminating road signs and puddles. The storage facility looms ahead, its metal doors gleaming under streetlights.
"Please let there be answers,"
Her hands shake as she fits the key—found taped to the prepaid phone—into the lock. The lid creaks open, revealing stacks of documents, a passport, and a bundle of cash. Among them, a handwritten letter addressed to her.
"If you’re reading this, Emma, I had no choice. Trust no one. Find the truth, for both our sakes."
Emma’s grief is now mingled with resolve. The mystery of David’s final hours has become her burden—and her mission. As she dials a number written on the back of the letter, her voice is steady, her heart braced for whatever secrets remain.
"I’m ready, David. I’ll find the truth."
