Lila sat back in her chair, the letter trembling slightly in her hand. It was the fifth one this month, each more insistent than the last. The familiar scrawl of her twin brother, Finn, stared back at her, urging her to return to the Whispering Pines. "Why now, after all these years?" she whispered to herself, the words barely audible over the persistent rain.
Lila tightened her grip on the letter, its edges damp from the humid air. She took a deep breath, recalling the stories of people lost to these woods, never to be seen again. But the pull was undeniable. "I'm coming, Finn," she resolved, stepping onto the path that wound through the trees, her heart pounding with a mix of fear and hope.
It was here that Lila noticed something peculiar—a small clearing she didn't remember. It was as if it had appeared just for her. At its center stood a weathered stone, covered in ancient carvings she couldn't decipher. She knelt down, tracing the symbols with her fingers, feeling a strange connection to the place. "What secrets do you hold?" she wondered aloud, as a chill ran down her spine.
Lila followed the light, her footsteps silent on the forest floor. Before her, a figure emerged from the shadows—Finn, unchanged, as if time had stood still. "Lila," he called, his voice both familiar and distant, like a memory long forgotten. "Finn, how...?" she started, tears of disbelief and relief filling her eyes.
"I've been here, waiting," Finn explained, his gaze steady on Lila's. "The forest... it's different for everyone. It chose me, and now it calls to you." Lila shook her head, trying to comprehend the impossible. "But why? What does it want?" she asked, desperation in her voice.
"It's not about what it wants," Finn replied, a gentle smile on his lips. "It's about what you need. To heal, to understand. The forest holds our past, and now it offers you a future." Lila nodded, the weight of the years lifting from her shoulders. Together, they turned toward the path leading out of the woods, ready to face whatever lay ahead, side by side once more.
