Luca Romano, the sharply dressed son of a notorious mafia boss, stands at one end of the corridor, his jaw set in a defiant glare. At the opposite end, Vivienne Drake, an enigmatic new student with pale skin and piercing eyes, leans against her locker, her gaze cold as marble. The tension between them is palpable, an unspoken rivalry simmering after their latest heated argument in history class.
"You think you’re better than everyone, don’t you?"
"Not better. Just not afraid of you or your father’s reputation, Luca."
A ripple of excitement runs through the classroom as the teacher announces the upcoming senior trip to Hawaii. Luca and Vivienne lock eyes across the room, both silently dreading the possibility of being paired together. The teacher posts the room assignments on the board, and a hush falls as their names appear together.
"Great. Stuck with the mafia prince for a week," Vivienne mutters under her breath.
"Look on the bright side. At least Hawaii’s big enough for both our egos," Luca shoots back, forcing a smirk.
Luca shoulders his duffel bag, glancing sideways as Vivienne glides past, suitcase in tow. The night air is sweet with plumeria; tiki torches flicker to life, casting moving shadows along the path to their shared bungalow. Inside, the room is split by an invisible line—his clutter on one side, her meticulous order on the other.
"Don’t touch my stuff,"
"Wouldn’t dream of it," comes her cool reply.
A dare from classmates leads Luca and Vivienne to the edge of the water, forced to work together in a midnight scavenger hunt. Tension crackles as they argue over clues, voices rising over the surf. Suddenly, a rogue wave knocks Luca off balance, and Vivienne catches his arm with unnatural strength.
"How did you—?"
"Let's just say I’m not your average girl," she says, eyes glinting red in the moonlight.
Luca sits opposite Vivienne, breathing hard after fleeing a near-accident on a rocky hiking path. They share secrets in the darkness, old wounds and hidden fears. Vivienne finally confesses her vampiric nature, her voice trembling between pride and shame.
"You’re not the only one trapped by family legacy. Mine just happens to be immortal,"
"Guess we both know what it’s like to be haunted," Luca replies, his anger fading into unexpected empathy.
Luca and Vivienne sit side by side, their past rivalry dissolved into laughter and quiet understanding. The fire crackles between them as they watch the sun rise, a new bond forged in the ashes of old enmity. For the first time, both feel free from their shadows, if only for a moment.
"Maybe Hawaii isn’t big enough—for all the things we’re running from. But maybe it’s big enough for us,"
"I’d like to find out," she whispers, her hand finding his beneath the sand.
