Kaito navigated through the throng, his heart pounding in his chest. Everywhere he looked, students were enjoying the festivities, their faces illuminated by the soft lantern light. He clutched a small, handwritten note in his trembling hand, a tangible symbol of the feelings he had long kept hidden.
Kaito scanned the crowd, his eyes searching for Hana. She was his best friend, always surrounded by admirers drawn to her bright smile and infectious energy. But tonight, he hoped, she would see him differently. His pulse quickened as he spotted her near the food stalls, her laughter ringing out like a bell.
Hana was talking animatedly with a group of her friends, her hands gesturing enthusiastically. Kaito felt a wave of anxiety wash over him, but he knew he couldn't let this moment slip away. He took a step forward, then another, until he was close enough to catch her eye.
"Hana, can we talk?" Kaito's voice was barely above a whisper, but it carried the weight of his emotions. Her friends glanced at each other knowingly and stepped back, giving them space.
"Of course, Kaito," she replied, her smile encouraging but questioning.
Kaito paused, his heart threatening to leap out of his chest. Hana waited patiently, her eyes reflecting the lanterns' glow. He took a deep breath and handed her the note.
"I've wanted to tell you this for a long time, Hana," he began, his voice steadying with resolve. "I... I like you. More than just a friend."
Her eyes lifted from the paper to meet his, and she smiled—a soft, genuine smile that made his heart skip a beat.
"Kaito," she said softly, her voice carrying warmth and sincerity, "I've been waiting for you to say that."
