Elina stepped through the front doors, her backpack dangling from one shoulder, and paused to soak in the sudden rush of open air. The warmth on her skin felt like an invitation, and she let out a slow, contented breath. Near the bike racks, Aiden waited, shifting from foot to foot, his smile growing as soon as their eyes met.
"Long day?"
Elina grinned, walking up to him and slipping her hand into his without hesitation.
"Elongated," she replied, laughter brightening her eyes. "But way better now." Their fingers intertwined, and the tension of the day seemed to melt away, replaced by the ease of being together.
The walk was slow on purpose, neither of them in a hurry to get anywhere but here. Aiden nudged Elina with his shoulder, eliciting a grin that made her cheeks flush with warmth. They talked about everything and nothing—the best pizza place, how math was getting harder, the latest episode of a show they both loved—content in the comfortable silence that sometimes drifted between them.
They spread a faded blanket beneath the oak, settling into a spot where the world felt quieter and farther away. Elina lay back, eyes tracing the slow shift of clouds above, while Aiden propped himself up on one elbow beside her. The music from a nearby radio blended with the rustling leaves, creating a gentle backdrop for their shared solitude.
"You know," he began, voice barely above a whisper, "I look forward to this all day. Just us, nothing else to worry about. It’s like the rest of the world disappears for a little while."
Elina turned, her gaze soft and steady, searching his face for something she already knew.
"Me too," she said, her words a quiet agreement, full of promise.
When it was time to go, Aiden reached for Elina's hand again, their fingers lacing together naturally. They walked side by side, the memory of golden light and easy smiles lingering between them. For both, it was more than just an after-school date—it was a quiet moment, cherished and simple, one they’d hold close long after the hallways and homework faded into the past.
