Vanessa pressed herself against the cool metal, hoping to disappear into the gray-blue lockers. She peeked over her glasses, her gaze landing on Ni-ki, the notorious school bully, surrounded by his friends. His laughter was loud, but when his eyes met hers, the sound faltered, just for a second.
"What are you looking at, Vanessa?" The words weren’t as sharp as usual, and though his friends snickered, Ni-ki lingered, almost expectant.
Vanessa hesitated at the threshold, clutching her notebook. She had stayed after class to avoid the crowded halls, but as she entered, she found Ni-ki sitting alone, staring out the window.
"I—I didn’t know anyone was here," she stammered, her voice barely more than a whisper.
"It's fine. I like the quiet sometimes," he replied, softer than she expected, eyes flickering to her before quickly darting away.

A shadow falls over her page, and she glances up to see Ni-ki standing awkwardly, hands shoved in his pockets.
"Can I sit?" His voice is uncertain, and for the first time, Vanessa notices the hesitation in his posture.
"Sure," she murmurs, her cheeks tinged pink. They sit in silence, the only sound the scratch of pencil on paper.

Vanessa enters quietly, her presence gentle and unassuming. She watches him for a moment, then sits beside him, close enough to feel the tension in his shoulders.
"People always think I’m tough because I have to be. But sometimes…I wish I could be different," he admits, his voice raw.
"You don’t have to pretend with me," she replies softly, offering a small, reassuring smile.

He hesitates before speaking, voice trembling but determined. "I think about you all the time. You make me want to be better, Vanessa. I…I think I’m in love with you,"
Vanessa blushes, words caught in her throat, but her eyes gleam with hope.

Ni-ki squeezes her hand, a shy grin breaking through his usual bravado. "I fell for you, Vanessa, and I don’t think I’ll ever stop,"
"Maybe I fell too. Just not as hard as you did," she teases, her laughter bright and unguarded as they walk into the day together, leaving their old roles behind.
