Emily bursts through the front door, her backpack flung over one shoulder, laughter echoing behind her. Sophie, her younger sister, sits cross-legged on the rug, engrossed in drawing colorful shapes in her sketchbook. The room is filled with a sense of comfort and belonging.
"Guess what happened at school today, Sophie?"
Sophie looks up, her eyes wide with excitement as she sets her markers aside. "Did you win the art contest?"
Emily hesitates, glancing at her sister. "No, not this time. But I met someone who reminded me of you—kind and creative," she admits, smiling softly.
Sophie scrunches her nose. "Really? Was she as good at drawing as me?" The sisters exchange a knowing look, the evening air filled with warmth and unspoken affection.
Emily sits at her desk, helping Sophie with her homework. Sophie rests her head on her sister’s shoulder, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Emily, do you think we'll always be this close?"
"I promise, no matter what happens, I’ll always love you, Soph," she replies, squeezing her sister’s hand.
Emily takes a deep breath, frustration flickering across her face. "It's okay, Sophie. Accidents happen," she says, though her voice trembles.
Sophie sniffles, guilt written all over her face. "I didn’t mean to ruin your work,"
"You didn’t ruin anything. We can fix it together," Emily assures her, gently wiping away her sister’s tears.
Sophie beams as Emily lets her add the finishing touches. "It’s even better than before," she declares proudly.
"That’s because we did it together," Emily replies, wrapping an arm around her sister’s shoulders. Their bond feels stronger than ever, the room alive with their shared joy.
Emily looks at Sophie, her voice full of sincerity. "No matter how much we grow or change, I’ll always love my sister,"
"And I’ll always love you, Emily," Sophie replies, leaning her head on her sister’s shoulder as the night embraces them in peaceful silence.
