Erik, a lanky sixteen-year-old with tousled hair and hopeful eyes, waits nervously by the steps. When Ardi, a petite girl with a confident smile and bright, inquisitive eyes, approaches, his face lights up. "Hey, Ardi! You made it," he calls out, voice trembling just slightly. "Of course I did, Erik. I wouldn't miss this for the world," she teases, nudging his arm as they walk together, their laughter mingling in the warm sunlight.
Caleb, Erik’s twelve-year-old brother, bursts into the room in a whirl of energy, his face flushed from a recent soccer match. Ardi grins, noticing the boy's easy charm and bright eyes. "Hey, you must be Caleb! Erik’s told me so much about you," she says warmly, tousling his hair. Caleb grins, a little embarrassed but basking in the attention as Erik looks on, amused.
Ardi laughs at something Caleb says, her cheeks flushed, eyes sparkling with admiration. "You really are mature for your age, you know? I wish I'd been that confident when I was twelve," she says, looking at him with newfound respect. Caleb shrugs, but there's pride in his smile, and he glances shyly at Ardi, the beginnings of something unspoken passing between them.
Ardi stands close to Caleb, her hand resting lightly on his shoulder. Their voices drop to whispers, and in a moment that feels suspended in time, she leans in, pressing her lips gently to his. The world seems to tilt, and in the doorway, Erik stands frozen, eyes wide in disbelief, the scene burning into his memory.
Erik sobs uncontrollably, his anguish overwhelming as humiliation and heartbreak blend together. In his distress, he feels a warm wetness spread across his jeans, adding a new layer of shame. "Why wasn’t I enough?" he whispers to the empty room, the words echoing in the quiet as he buries his face in his hands.
Ardi looks at Erik, her voice gentle but firm. "I’m sorry, Erik. I didn’t mean to hurt you, but I need someone who feels grown-up. I hope you understand," she says, her gaze flicking to Caleb, who stands beside her, nervously clutching her hand. Erik turns away, tears stinging his eyes as Ardi and Caleb step off the porch together, sunlight framing them as they walk into a new chapter.
