Zach was sprawled on his bed, lost in the lazy haze of summer, when his phone suddenly came to life. The caller ID flashed a name he hadn’t seen in five years—Ariel, the girl who used to follow him everywhere, always smiling, always talking. He hesitated before picking up, curiosity and a tinge of anxiety mixing in his chest.
"Hello? Ariel?"
"Hey Zach... it’s been a while. How are you?"
Ariel[/@ch_2]’s voice comes through deeper and more mature than Zach remembers. Golden sunlight highlights dust motes dancing in the air, while Zach sits up, alert, the phone pressed close to his ear.]
Zach almost didn’t recognize her voice—it was no longer the high, chirpy tone of a ten-year-old, but smooth and unexpectedly confident. His mind raced as Ariel explained she wanted to meet up, saying she was in town for the summer.
"I’d really like to see you again, Zach. Maybe grab some ice cream or walk by the lake? I promise I won’t be as annoying as I used to be."
"Uh, sure. That sounds cool," he replied, still in shock, trying to picture what she might look like after all these years.
Zach checked his watch for the third time, wondering if he’d recognize Ariel at all. Suddenly, a massive shadow fell over him, blocking out the sun. He looked up, jaw dropping, as Ariel approached—towering at nine feet, with muscles rippling beneath her sundress, and an overwhelming presence that made everyone nearby stare.
"Hey, Zach. Miss me?"
"Ariel? Whoa… you look… wow, you look incredible," he stammered, unable to hide his astonishment.
Ariel[/@ch_2] draws double-takes from everyone. The air is sweet with the scent of waffle cones.]
Ariel grinned, kneeling awkwardly at the table to be closer to Zach’s eye level. She ordered a triple scoop—a tiny treat in her enormous hand—and watched Zach’s reactions with a mixture of hope and mischief.
"I kind of grew a little," she teased, flexing her biceps with a laugh. Zach relaxed a bit, realizing underneath all that muscle was still the same friend he remembered.
"A little? You’re like a superhero," he joked back, the tension easing as they both laughed.

Ariel hesitated, then stopped, her giant hand gently touching Zach’s shoulder.
"Look, Zach… I know I was kind of obsessed with you when we were kids, and I get that I probably annoyed you. But I’ve never stopped thinking about you. I know I’m… different now, but I’d really like a chance. Would you maybe want to go out with me? Like, for real?"
Zach looked up at her earnest, nervous expression, realizing just how much courage it took for her to ask.
Ariel[/@ch_2] and Zach sit together on the grass, closer now, their laughter blending with the gentle sounds of the night.]
Zach smiled, feeling the warmth of Ariel’s presence beside him.
"Honestly, I think I’d like that. You always did make life more interesting, Ariel. Let’s see where this goes,"
Ariel grinned, her eyes shining with happiness, and leaned gently against Zach, careful not to crush him. As the summer night deepened, both felt the promise of something new, unafraid of their differences and ready for whatever came next.
