Sarah walked into the familiar coffee shop, the scent of roasted beans embracing her like a long-lost friend. She scanned the room until her eyes landed on Tom, who was sitting at their old favorite corner table. The sight of him brought a flood of memories, both sweet and bitter.
"It's been a while," she said, taking a seat across from him.
Tom nodded, his expression a mix of nostalgia and regret. "Too long," he replied, offering a tentative smile.
Tom leaned back, his fingers tracing the rim of his cup. "Remember the first time we sat here? We talked for hours," he reminisced.
Sarah chuckled softly, "We were so full of dreams. Everything seemed possible back then." Her gaze drifted to the window, where the sun cast long shadows on the floor.
"We had plans," Tom added, his voice tinged with a hint of sadness. "What happened to us, Sarah?"
Sarah looked down at her hands, remembering the warmth they once held. "Life happened, I guess. Misunderstandings, egos... we lost sight of what mattered," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.
Tom sighed, "I never meant to hurt you. I just got caught up in my own world."
"We both did," Sarah replied, meeting his gaze. "But sitting here now, maybe... maybe there's a chance to start anew?"
Tom hesitated, searching Sarah's eyes for any sign of hope. "Do you think we can really move past everything?" he asked, vulnerability lacing his words.
Sarah took a deep breath, "I believe we owe it to ourselves to try. To see if we can rebuild, even if it's just a friendship." Her voice was steady, yet filled with emotion.
Tom smiled, a genuine warmth returning to his eyes. "I'd like that, Sarah. Let's take it one step at a time," he agreed, reaching out for her hand.
Sarah clasped it, feeling the familiar comfort she had missed. "One step at a time," she echoed, as they both looked out the window, watching the world move on, ready to face whatever lay ahead together once more.
