Y/N L/N walked alongside Paul Mescal, the laughter from their shared memories echoing in the theater district's narrow alleys. They had just finished rehearsals for a new play and were heading towards their favorite café, a cozy place with dim lighting and warm wooden interiors.
"It's hard to believe we've been doing this for ten years," Paul mused as they settled into their usual booth, a hint of nostalgia in his voice.
"Time flies when you're having fun, right?" Y/N replied, her smile not quite reaching her eyes as she glanced at him, wishing she could read his thoughts.
Carlos Saint, a fellow actor known for his charming smile and magnetic presence, had recently begun showing interest in Y/N. She felt flattered and intrigued, yet her heart remained tethered to Paul, the man who understood her better than anyone.
"So, I heard you're going out with Carlos tomorrow?" Paul's tone was light, but the tight grip on his coffee cup betrayed his unease.
"Yeah, he asked me to dinner," Y/N replied, trying to sound casual. "He seems nice."
Paul nodded, forcing a smile while his heart ached with silent longing.
Paul couldn't shake the image of Y/N with someone else. The idea of losing her, of never confessing his feelings, gnawed at him. Each step echoed his resolve: he had to tell her the truth.
"I can't lose her," he muttered to himself, his breath visible in the chilly night air.
Paul spotted Y/N sitting on a bench, her expression contemplative as she watched the ducks glide across the pond. He approached, heart pounding with a mixture of fear and hope.
"Y/N, there's something I need to tell you," he began, his voice steady despite the turmoil inside.
"What is it, Paul?" Y/N asked, turning to face him, her curiosity piqued by the intensity in his eyes.
"I can't keep pretending that I'm okay with just being friends," Paul confessed, his gaze unwavering. "I’ve loved you for as long as I can remember. Seeing you with Carlos made me realize I can't lose you without telling you how I feel."
Y/N was silent, her heart leaping at his words. She had dreamed of this moment but never dared to hope it would come true.
"Paul, I..." She hesitated, then smiled, her eyes brimming with emotions. "I've felt the same way for so long. I was just too scared to ruin what we have."
The tension melted away, replaced by a warmth that enveloped them both. Paul held her close, the relief and joy overwhelming. They pulled back slightly, smiles mirroring each other’s happiness.
"I guess we were both a little scared," Paul chuckled softly, brushing a strand of hair from her face.
"But not anymore," Y/N replied, her heart full, knowing they had finally found the courage to turn their friendship into something much more.
