Aiden leaned against the dunk tank railing, his casual swim trunks clinging slightly from the humidity, trying to project confidence despite the knot of uncertainty in his stomach.
Marina stood a few feet away in her bright, colorful bikini, sunglasses perched atop her head like a crown, her skin glowing under the sunlight as she bounced a soft foam ball in her hand.
"Ready? You look like you're about to face a firing squad, but don't worry, I'll go easy on you—at least for the first throw."
"You're definitely aiming too hard already. This is supposed to be friendly, right? Not some Olympic event where you're gunning for gold."
"Friendly competition, big difference! Watch and learn how it's done. Three… two… one!"
Marina tossed the foam ball with precision—clunk! The target triggered, and Aiden plummeted into the tank with a massive splash, water erupting like a geyser.
He surfaced laughing, rivulets streaming down his face, shaking his head to clear the droplets.
"Okay, okay, beginner’s luck for sure. Or are you claiming pro status now? Your turn—fair's fair."
Marina barely had time to protest before Aiden hit the lever—splash! She dropped in, emerging with a burst of laughter, pushing her soaked hair back and sending sprays of water everywhere like a playful fountain.
"Oh, you’re so getting soaked again for that sneaky move! I can't believe you didn't even warn me properly. This means war now—full rematch mode activated."
"Worth every second of that splash. Admit it, the water feels amazing on a day like this. Ready for round two, or are you tapping out already?"
The two traded throws amid nonstop laughter, splashes erupting repeatedly as the crowd cheered them on.
Rematches blurred into a joyful frenzy, each dunk followed by climbing out, dripping and grinning, the competition fueling their energy.
"You're tougher than I thought, but I’ve got your number now—watch this one go perfectly!"
"Bring it! Losing to you might just be the highlight of my summer so far. One more, and then we call a truce?"
"Truce? Never! But fine, one more epic throw to settle it."
Marina kicked her feet idly, her bikini still damp and sparkling.
"Okay… maybe that was actually fun. More than I expected from a silly dunk tank challenge. You turned out to be a pretty great sport about all the splashes."
"‘Maybe’? Come on, I was phenomenal. Took every dunk like a champ and still came back for more. Best date idea ever, if you ask me."
"Date? Is that what we're calling this now? Alright, you were… alright. Rematch tomorrow? But don't think I'll go easy."
A small pause hung between them, filled only by the water's whisper and their shared smiles.
Aiden glanced at her, heart picking up pace.
Without overthinking, Marina leaned in, pressing a quick, soft kiss to his lips—warm and unexpected.
"There. Consolation prize for all your heroic dunks today. Sweet, right? Don't get too cocky though."
"That's it? I think I deserve at least two points for surviving your aim. In your dreams for more? Maybe, but I'll take it."
"In your dreams, exactly. Hopping off now—don’t be late tomorrow, or no prize waiting. This was fun; let's make tomorrow even better."
"Wouldn’t miss it for the world. Losing to you again? Sounds perfect."
As she walked backward toward the exit, grinning, Aiden sat smiling, the warmth lingering long after.
