Lizzy rolled out of bed, her heart fluttering with the familiar excitement of a new school day. She quickly got ready, stuffing her notebook and a cup of coffee into her backpack. Her sister, Isabelle, was waiting at the door, dressed in her wrestling team jacket. "Ready, Liz?" Isabelle asked with a grin.
"As ready as I'll ever be," Lizzy replied, trying to ignore the butterflies in her stomach at the thought of seeing J at school.
Lizzy walked alongside Isabelle, the noise of the school filling her ears. As they approached J and his group of friends, her heart skipped a beat. "Hey, J!" she called out, her voice tinged with nervousness.
Vinny, a baseball player, turned and waved. "Hey, Lizzy!" he greeted warmly, his smile genuine.
J returned her greeting with a casual nod, "Hey, Lizzy," he said, his attention already drifting back to his friends.
As Lizzy walked past J's friends, she heard them start to tease. "Oh look, it's [@ch_3]J's girlfriend,"[/@ch_5] one of them joked, his voice carrying over the noise.
Lizzy felt her cheeks burn with embarrassment, but she forced a smile. J shot her an apologetic look. "Ignore them, Lizzy. You're a good friend," he reassured her, his tone sincere but painfully platonic.
Lizzy sat with her lunch tray, picking at her food as she replayed the morning's events in her mind. Isabelle joined her, offering a comforting smile. "Don't let them get to you, Lizzy. J just needs time to see how great you are," she encouraged.
"I hope so," Lizzy sighed, trying to muster up some hope.
Lizzy made her way across the courtyard, her thoughts still on J. She paused at the fountain, lost in thought, when Vinny approached. "Hey, Lizzy, you okay?" he asked, concern in his eyes.
"Yeah, just thinking," Lizzy replied, grateful for his company.
"If you ever need to talk, I'm here," Vinny offered, his sincerity warming her heart.
Lizzy gazed out, reflecting on the day's events. Despite the teasing and J's indifference, she felt a small flicker of hope kindled by Vinny's kindness.
"Maybe things will change," she whispered to herself, determined to keep moving forward, no matter how uncertain the path may be.
