Linda gazed out at the smog-laden city from her 17th-floor apartment, the oppressive heat clinging to the night like a suffocating blanket. Tucking her children into bed, she took pride in the sanctuary she had created amidst the chaos outside. With a sigh, she slipped into her cool sheets, hoping for respite.
As Linda rolled over, a multicoloured light pierced through her window, painting the walls in shifting hues. Initially dismissing it as a police drone, she hesitated. Each time she attempted to investigate, the lights vanished. Frustration mingled with unease, and she mumbled a curse before retreating under her covers.
Suddenly, an intense beam of white light flooded the room, accompanied by the eerie sound of windows unlocking. Linda felt the cool breeze rush in as drawers and cupboards flung open, revealing their contents. A chill ran down her spine as the covers were yanked from her grasp, leaving her exposed to the chaos unfolding around her.
Five figures darted around the apartment, their movements frantic and unpredictable, like wild birds trapped indoors. Linda shouted in a mix of fear and anger, demanding their departure. "What do you think you are doing? Get out of my apartment!" Her words seemed futile as the alien intruders continued their disarray.
A whistle, akin to a train's call, echoed through the room, prompting the aliens to abandon their havoc and leap out the window into a waiting spacecraft. Linda watched in shock as the ship, shimmering with multicoloured lights, vanished into the cityscape. Her apartment lay in ruins, a testament to the bizarre encounter. She checked on her children, relieved to find them undisturbed.
With the apartment restored to its former state, Linda armed herself with a baseball bat, ready for the return of the mischievous visitors. The following night, as the familiar lights illuminated her home once more, she stood her ground, embodying the fierce protector within. As the aliens re-entered, Linda swung with resolve. "Not tonight, you won't!"
