Rok-Tahk, a towering Brikarian with skin like sculpted rock, spots a young human cadet struggling to stand. His ankle is swollen, and his face is a mask of frustration.
Cadet Tom Harris tries to mask his discomfort, attempting to push through the pain. "You look like you could use some help," Rok-Tahk says, her voice a soothing rumble.
"I don't want to be a burden," Tom replies, his gaze dropping to the floor.
"Nonsense. We look out for each other here," Rok-Tahk insists, effortlessly lifting him onto her shoulder.
Rok-Tahk strides in with Tom on her shoulder, drawing curious glances from their classmates. She gently sets him down at his station, earning appreciative nods from those around them.
Instructor Dael, a Vulcan with sharp features, raises an eyebrow at the duo. "An unexpected team, but an exemplary demonstration of Starfleet's values," he remarks.
Tom feels a warmth spread through his chest, realizing that his peers admire their camaraderie rather than pitying his condition.
Tom sits on a bench, his ankle elevated, while Rok-Tahk stands nearby, her gaze sweeping the vibrant campus.
"Thank you. I was so worried about falling behind," Tom admits, glancing up at her.
"We all have our strengths, Tom. Today, I carry you. Tomorrow, you might be the one leading us," Rok-Tahk reassures him.
Rok-Tahk and Tom join their friends at a table, the scent of freshly cooked food mingling with the warmth of camaraderie.
Cadet Marie, a Betazoid with sparkling eyes, leans over. "I heard about your adventures today. You're becoming quite the team," she teases.
"I couldn't have asked for a better partner," Tom replies, his smile reflecting newfound confidence.
Tom stands by the window of his dorm room, watching the stars slowly blink into existence. Beside him, Rok-Tahk admires the view, a contented silence between them.
"I've learned a lot about what it means to be part of Starfleet," Tom reflects, the evening breeze rustling his hair.
"And you've taught me that strength isn't just physical," Rok-Tahk replies, her eyes softening.
Tom and Rok-Tahk linger at the window, their friendship strengthened by the day's events. Together, they watch the lights of the USS Protostar twinkle in the distance, a reminder of the adventures and challenges that await.
"To new beginnings and shared journeys," Tom proposes, extending his hand.
"Together," Rok-Tahk agrees, clasping his hand with a firm yet gentle grip.
