Eli, a wiry twelve-year-old with tousled black hair and restless eyes, tosses in bed. As his chest rises and falls, images swirl behind his eyelids—fractured fragments of impossible cities and endless skies. He wakes suddenly, heart pounding, breathless from a dream that felt more real than waking. For a moment, he wonders if the world he just left behind was the true reality.
Eli slides into his pod, feeling the cool synthetic fabric cradle his body. His classmates are already under, faces peaceful or troubled as they slip into the dreams dictated by the Council. He closes his eyes, expecting the usual scripted visions, but instead finds himself standing in a field of silver grass, alone. The sky above him is a swirling canvas, and with a single thought, he paints a blazing comet across it.
Eli experiments, shaping mountains with a gesture, calling forth a flock of glass-winged birds. He laughs in disbelief, pushing the boundaries of the world around him. But then, a shadow flickers at the edge of his vision—someone, or something, is watching his every move. The field ripples with tension, as if the dream itself is warning him.
A figure steps forward—Director Sable, the Council’s enforcer, tall and severe, eyes sharp as razors. "You’re not supposed to do that, Eli. Dreams are meant to be controlled, not rewritten," the Director’s voice echoes, both in the chamber and in Eli’s mind. "Why? Who decides what we’re allowed to dream?" Eli demands, fear and defiance mingling in his voice.
Eli focuses, seizing control of the chaos. The Director’s image flickers, struggling to maintain authority, but Eli’s will is stronger. He reaches out, reshaping the dream for everyone—he gives them wings, lets them soar above the city, free for the first time. The boundaries of the Council’s control waver, their grip loosening.
Eli stands atop a building, wind tousling his hair, a quiet smile on his lips. The world feels different—lighter, brighter, the air humming with hope. He knows the Council will come for him, but for now, he has given the city something new: the power to dream beyond their chains.
