Jamie blinked sleepily, feeling the familiar tickle inside their nostrils. The world outside was bursting with vibrant green leaves and blooming flowers, but inside, Jamie’s nose was staging a rebellion. They reached for another tissue, sighing as they wondered aloud, "Why does my nose fill up with boogers every time allergy season comes around?"
Sophie[/@ch_2], pours tea while scrolling through her tablet.]
Jamie plopped into a chair, tissue in hand, and looked at Sophie expectantly. "Do you know why my nose gets so stuffy and gross when I have allergies?" Sophie smiled, setting aside her tea, and replied, "Actually, I do! It’s your body’s way of protecting you."
Sophie continued, "When you breathe in things like pollen or dust, your nose thinks they’re dangerous invaders. So, it sends out mucus—what you call boogers—to trap the allergens and stop them from getting deeper into your body." Jamie wrinkled their nose, "So, boogers are actually helpful?"
The defenders capture the pollen in sticky traps, sweeping them toward the exit. Sophie narrates, "Exactly! The mucus traps the pollen, and then tiny hairs called cilia move it out of your nose. Sometimes, when there’s a lot of pollen, your nose makes extra mucus, and it dries up into boogers."
Jamie chuckled, "I guess my nose is just doing its job—maybe a little too well!" Sophie sipped her tea, "That’s right. It might be annoying, but it means your body’s trying to keep you healthy."
Jamie breathed in, then quickly sneezed, laughter echoing through the kitchen. They felt a little better knowing their boogers were secret heroes, working hard behind the scenes every allergy season.
