Ella skipped across the grass, her laughter carried by the wind. She wore a wide-brimmed straw hat and a yellow dress that shimmered in the sunlight. Her friends, Maya and Leo, were already arranging plates of sandwiches and fruit.
"Ella, you brought lemonade, right? It’s so hot today!"
"Of course! And I made extra, just for you, Maya."
Leo passed around slices of watermelon, their bright red flesh glistening with juice. Ella poured lemonade into colorful cups, her hands steady and cheerful. Maya giggled as she tried to balance a stack of cookies on her plate.
"I bet I can eat more watermelon than both of you combined!"
"Is that a challenge, Leo? You know I never back down from a food contest."
Maya leapt up, frisbee in hand, her hair catching the sunlight as she called for a game. Leo dashed after her, almost tripping over the picnic basket, while Ella laughed and joined in the chase. Their voices echoed happily across the field.
"Catch me if you can, Leo!"
"I think Maya’s unbeatable at this game—let’s make her run for it!"
Ella knelt down, holding her breath as the rabbits approached. Maya and Leo watched in awe, careful not to move too quickly. The smallest rabbit nibbled a fallen strawberry, its fur soft and brown.
"I’ve never seen rabbits this close before. They must like our picnic, too."
"Let’s leave them some fruit. Maybe they’ll come back next time."
Maya leaned against Ella, her eyes half-closed. Leo played a gentle tune on his harmonica, the melody drifting softly through the warm air. The picnic baskets were nearly empty, save for a few crumbs and memories.
"This was the best picnic ever, Ella. We should do this again soon."
"Definitely. Next time, I’ll bake a chocolate cake."
Ella folded the blanket with care, glancing back at the oak tree and the spot where the rabbits had appeared. As they walked home together, the evening buzzed with the promise of more adventures to come.
"Goodnight, meadow. We’ll be back soon!"
