Millie adjusted her wide-brimmed hat, her gaze set on the endless prairie stretching beyond the town limits. By her side, Wanda, a squat brown pug with a wrinkled brow, sniffed the morning air, while Patti, a sleek black French Bulldog, danced impatiently at the end of her leash. Saddlebags packed with treats and supplies, the trio prepared for a day of adventure.
"Ready, girls? The West is waiting for us," Millie said, her voice brimming with anticipation.
The trio trekked through tall grass, Wanda leading the way with her nose pressed to the ground. Patti kept a vigilant lookout for prairie critters, occasionally barking at a distant jackrabbit. Their laughter and barks mingled with the chirping of cicadas, each step taking them farther from the safety of town and deeper into the unknown.
"Millie, look! I'm sure there's something moving over there!" Patti barked, tail wagging furiously.
"Don't be silly, Patti. It's just the wind," grumbled Wanda, but her ears perked up all the same.
Millie knelt by the river, cupping cool water in her hands while her dogs splashed and played. Wanda dove after a floating stick, while Patti attempted to herd a family of ducks with her determined bark. The air was filled with laughter, splashing, and the occasional indignant quack.
"Come on, you two! We need to find a way across," Millie called, scanning the riverbank for a shallow spot.
The dogs froze, hackles raised, as a rattlesnake slithered into their path, its tail buzzing ominously. Millie held out her arms, signaling the dogs to stay back, her heart pounding in her chest. For a tense moment, no one moved, the only sound the snake’s warning rattle.
"Easy now, girls. Let’s give it space," Millie whispered, gently guiding Wanda and Patti around the danger.
Millie unrolled her blanket while Wanda curled up at her feet and Patti gnawed contentedly on a stick. The air was scented with pine and woodsmoke, and as the stars began to appear, a gentle hush fell over the land.
"What a day, girls. You were so brave out there," Millie murmured, scratching both dogs behind their ears.
Millie stretched and smiled at her loyal companions, ready for whatever the next day would bring. Wanda yawned wide, her tail thumping, while Patti bounded ahead, eager to explore. Together, they set off once more into the boundless West, the promise of discovery shining in their eyes.
