Evie, a spirited girl of twelve, traces her finger along the Mourne Mountains on the map, while her younger brother Thomas eagerly checks their compass. Their parents, MumAnne and DadJohn, sip tea and exchange excited glances. "This weekend, Slieve Donard awaits! Who's ready for an adventure?" Dad demonstrates how to use a flint to start a fire, while Evie and Thomas practice tying knots with lengths of rope. A kestrel circles overhead, casting fleeting shadows on the mossy ground. "Do you think we could ever live out here, like really live? No WiFi, no city noise, just us and the wild," Evie muses, uncertain.
Mum passes mugs of hot chocolate, her gaze lingering on the darkened forest. "We've been thinking about making this our life, not just our weekends. What if we left our jobs and lived off grid? Grew our own food, built our own shelter, explored every day?" Thomas fidgets with a stick, the firelight flickering over his anxious face.
"But what about my games, Evie? And your friends? How would we talk to them without the internet?" Thomas whispers, worry threading his words. Evie stares up at the stars, the silence of the wild wrapping around her like a blanket. "Maybe we could find new ways to stay connected. Or maybe... it would be hard, but kind of magical too," she replies, her voice wavering with both doubt and excitement.
"What do you two think? Are you ready for a real adventure? Not just for a weekend, but for always?" Evie and Thomas exchange a long look, the weight of possibility hovering between them. "We’re scared. But maybe... we’re also ready to try," Evie says softly, her brother nodding in agreement.
